Social Innovation in Marginalized Rural Areas (SIMRA)
Social
Innovation in Marginalised Rural Areas(SIMRA) is a four-year project
(2016-20) funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Programme. It aims to
advance understanding of social innovation and innovative governance in
agriculture, forestry and rural development, and how to boost them, in
marginalized rural areas across Europe and around the Mediterranean, including
non-EU countries.
Social Innovation (SI) is the reconfiguring of social practices in response to societal challenges that seek to enhance the outcomes on societal well-being and necessarily include the engagement of civil society actors
SI aims to increase human wellbeing, responding to social demands that markets or existing institutions do not traditionally address. Through SI, diverse actors, including civil society, entrepreneurs, and policy makers, create or reconfigure social arrangements or networks, with the goal of enhancing development outcomes with respect to the economy, society and the environment.
SI can introduce new solutions to challenges faced by rural areas, especially those considered to be marginalized. To link SIs with desired policy outcomes, account needs to be taken of local conditions and intermediating factors, to make better use of SIs for the development of marginalized rural areas.
